Grasso is Unstoppable in New Egypt URC, Pauch Wins 4th
New Egypt, NJ
(July, 12th 2008) – Billy
Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ won his fourth event of the season Saturday
night as he captured the 30 lap Modified feature at New Egypt
Speedway. Pauch started ninth and wasted no time getting to the front
as he grabbed the lead on lap five and went on to take top honors on
RJS Heating and Air Conditioning Night.
Rick Wegner jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green and lead
the first five circuits while Pauch worked his way up using the low
groove. Pauch then quickly got by Wegner and began to open up an
advantage. Pauch was fast, but not over powering as he lead by about 6
car lengths over the final half of the race. Wegner had his hands full
with Jim Robertson for a while, but was able to repel his challenges
and hold on for second, his best finish ever. Robertson settled for a
hard earned third. The battle everyone was watching over the final 20
laps was for fourth between Tim Tanner and Bob Drayton. After running
side by side for many laps, including a few 3 wide laps with point
leader Keith Hoffman sneaking into the mix, Tanner was able to hold
off everyone to lock up the fourth position. Drayton and Hoffman
crossed the line in fifth and sixth respectively.
J.J. Grasso of Pedricktown, NJ claimed the fourth win of his young
career in the Rislone URC Sprint Series 25 lap feature event, his
third of 2008. All four of Grasso’s wins have come here at New Egypt
Speedway, as he has now won 4 of the last 5 URC events held here at
NES. By virtue of this win Grasso becomes the first URC driver ever to
win three features in a row at New Egypt. Grasso started this night on
the pole, but fell back to third at the start. Kyle Purks and veteran
Gary Gollub raced by on the start and Grasso had to regroup. He did in
tremendous fashion as he grabbed the lead back by lap six. With the
final 19 laps being run caution free Grasso checked out and ran away
& hid from the field. The battle for second was a good one as
Chris Coyle raced by Ed Aiken for the spot at halfway, only to have
Aiken track him back down over the final 5 laps. Aiken would fall
short though as Coyle finished in the runner-up spot. Modified winner
Billy Pauch came from 11th starting spot to finish fourth while Gollub
rounded out the top five.
When announcer Nick Leach asked Grasso in victory lane what they were
doing to cause this tremendous success at New Egypt, Grasso replied,
"I have no idea, but I wish we ran here every week!, When we
dropped back to third on the initial start, I just tried to stay calm
knowing that we run really well here and that really help
In the A-1 Racing Products Sportsman 25 lap feature, all-time division
leading feature winner Rich Scagliotta of Bound Brook, NJ won his
second feature of the year, the 22nd of his career. Scagliotta
had to drive hard as two time winner Rocco Infante pushed him hard the
entire second half of the event but eventually had to settle for
second. Ray Woodall came home third followed by Mike Howardson and
point leader Willie Osmun.
The Crate-1 Sportsman feature saw Rookie Champ Gabe Fox win for the
first time in the 15 lap event, beating Ron Barnstead and Lee Allen.
The 15 lap Outlaw Stock feature saw Rich Reider win for the third
time, his second in a row. Rich Mongeau and Spider Ensinger, Jr. were
second and third.
