New Egypt's 'Cabin Fever 60' Heating Up

New Egypt, NJ (March 19, 2012)
– With unbelievable picture-perfect March weather in the forecast, the anticipation for the second annual ‘Cabin Fever’ RoC Weekend prsented Buhler Ford is certainly heating up and gaining momentum.  New Egypt Speedway will begin its 15th
year of operation as a dirt-surfaced racetrack as one of, if not the most talented fields in Northeast modified racing will come together on Saturday, March 24 for the Race of Champions Modified Tour.
The first official entry was received last week as Danny Johnson of Rochester, NY will look to finally add his name to the long list of NES all-time feature winners.  ‘The Doctor’s’ entry comes as no surprise as he is certainly a threat to win any race that he enters in his Page Trucking/Honeoye Auto Parts No. 27J.  The 52-year-old full-time race car driver is looking to operate on the field and while pocketing more than $8,000 to take back to his Northwest NY home.
Oley, Pa’s Duane Howard has pre-registered in his Chad Sinon BPG racing No. 4.  ‘The Diamond Cutter’ looked extremely stout this past weekend in both of Selinsgrove’s RoC races.  Howard owns one NES victory to date, but came ever-so-close to winning last year’s Friends of Mike event as he finished a close runner-up to winner Tim McCreadie.
Speaking of McCreadie, it was confirmed by car-owner Vinny Salerno that the WoO Late Model star will be in attendance on March 24 behind the wheel of the Four Star Transmissions ride.  ‘T-Mac’ stormed into town last year and claimed the $20,000 first place F.O.M. prize.  The Watertown, NY native will be looking to notch his second career win at NES on opening day.
Billy Pauch was in a different time zone last week at Selinsgrove as he dominated the $5,000 to win event.  Look for the Frenchtown, NJ driver to pick right up where he left off in 2011 at NES.  Pauch drove to a record 14 victories in one season last year, meanwhile hitting the 100 career-win mark at New Egypt.  ‘The Kid’ embraces the opportunity to race against the best of the best especially when they tow into his home track at NES.  Look for the Billy’s No. 1 to be tough as ever on opening day.
A very familiar face will return to the weekly wars at NES in 2012. Ryan Godown, who made a name for himself at NES, will once again be a track regular after a four-year absence of weekly competition.  Godown has teamed up with long-time car owner John Chemidlin for an all out assault at NES this coming season.  The ‘Ringoes Rocket’ currently sits sixth on the all-time win list at New Egypt.  According to Godown, he can’t think of a better way to come back ‘home’ than by winning the Cabin Fever 60.
Vernon, NJ’s Brett Hearn has confirmed that he’ll be in attendance for the RoC extravaganza.  Hearn recently reached the 800-win milestone and has no intentions on stopping there.  Hearn has had success at New Egypt in the past but it seems way too long ago for the man known as the ‘Corporate Jet’.  Although considered a NY invader, the ageless wonder would love to conquer this high dollar paying event in his home state.
A slew of Bridgeport Speedway competitors have made it known that they will be in competition on opening day.  Ryan Watt, who finished top 10 in points in last year’s RoC tour, has already marked Saturday on his calendar.  Two-time NES track champion Rick Laubach has March 24 circled as a date to remember.  Second-generation driver Richie Pratt Jr. is always willing to take his best shot at the NES competition.  Look for Pratt and teammate Brett Ballard to steer the South Jersey Overhead Door cars to respectable finishes.  Mike Franz will be back in action this coming Saturday after calling NES his home during the 2011 season.  Two-time NES track champion Jimmy Horton will be teamed up with Lincoln Auto Body No. 5 car confirmed car owner Dieter Schmidt last weekend.
Pennsylvania hot shoes Craig VonDohren and Jeff Strunk have indicated that they’ll tow East to claim the $8,000 top prize on Saturday.  CVD will be looking for his first career victory at New Egypt while Strunk will be looking for his third triumph.  Strunk plans on defending his ‘Cabin Fever’ victory as last year he walked away from NES with over $10,000 in his Norm Hansell owned No. 357.  Fresh off a good run at Selinsgrove, Kevin Hirthler confirmed that he has full intentions of competing in the Cabin Fever Challenge.  ‘The Flying Farmer’ Wade Hendrickson will return for specials in 2012 to NES.  Winning twice in 2011, Wade knows his way around the tricky New Egypt oval.  Doug Manmiller will be making a rare NES appearance this weekend.  Manmiller has yet to visit the winner’s circle at NJ track but, he certainly has full intentions on changing that.
The ‘First State’ of Delaware plans of having two of their own regulars represent the ‘South’ in the ‘Garden State’.  Delaware champion Matt Jester will be racing in only his third appearance at New Egypt while Eric Kormann looks to enter his first race of the season on Saturday before his home track of Delaware opens up in a few weeks.
Some heavy hitters out of New York plan on being present for the second Northeast modified event of the season.  The three-car John Wight-owned Gypsum Express Team will invade NES with team drivers Billy Decker, Pat Ward, and Larry Wight.  Defending Super DIRTcar champion Matt Sheppard will be one of the drivers to watch in the 60-lap affair.  The former 2007 NES track champion is always a force to be reckoned with when he’s in any race at New Egypt.  Super Dirt Week winner Stuart Friesen will be in search of his first career New Egypt victory.  Friesen is without a doubt one of the up and coming rising stars in dirt modified racing.
A host of NES ‘Young Guns’ will be ready for the opener this weekend.  Billy Pauch Jr., who will be calling New Egypt his home in 2012, is more than ready for this season as he will be piloting the potent Petruska No. 66.  Modified rookie Sammy Piazza has been waiting for opening day for a long time.  Piazza who will steer the beautiful black No.29 will also call NES his home for 2012.  Neal ‘The Wheel’ Williams will is another modified rookie who will race regularly at New Egypt this season.  With a brand new race team, Williams can’t wait to see his 358 small block in action with the big blocks.
Among other notables planning on being in competition on Saturday include, Johnny Guarino, Jimmy ‘Showtime’ Blewett, Tad Cox, Dominick Buffalino, David Van Horn, Sammy Martz, Willie Osmun, Mike Iles, Mike McAleer, Ron John Koczon, Gary Butler, and many more of the NES faithful will be hand on March 24.
The Modifieds will battle it out for 60 laps paying a very respectable $5,000.  There is a $150 ‘Gambler’s’ challenge which if taken would see the winner of the race walk away with $8,000.  Over $1,000 in lap money if up for grabs, thus pushing the winner’s share to possibly over $9,000.
The RoC Sportsman will round out the double header program as they will compete in their first tour race of 2012.  RoC 2011 champion Jeff Crambo will be looking to start off his title defense in fine fashion at New Egypt come March 24.  New Egypt Speedway track champion Rocco Infante is the odds-on-favorite track regular to defend his home turf in the 40-lap affair.  The Sportsman will race for $1,000 with a ‘Gambler’s’ option of $50 which would increase the winner’s share to $1,500.  There is over $500 in lap money posted which could mean a payday of over $2,000 for one lucky driver.
