New Egypt Speedway is everything an action-packed, fan-friendly entertainment facility should be.
Imagine this scene: Rust-colored dirt flies into the air and a raucous sound roars from the engines of more than 30 car engines. The grandstands are packed with families, friends, and a crowd of flag-waving children stacked on bleachers. More than 30 local legends – donned in racing suits and helmets—pilot 600 horsepower machines as they move sideways in a controlled slide – nothing but guts and glory.
Since 1946, this has been the scene at Ocean County’s New Egypt Speedway, where race fans from all over descend for weekly auto racing entertainment. What started off as a meager dirt track known as Ft. Dix Speedway now hosts some of the area’s greatest racing action – featuring everything from high-profile nationally touring series to mud bogs and monster trucks – but the majority of New Egypt Speedway’s events are highlighted by the region’s best weekly competitors. On average, close to 150 race cars compete weekly at New Egypt every Saturday Night from April to October.
New Egypt Speedway was built in 1946 as a small ¼-mile dirt track facility before being converted to a paved race track during the 1960’s, where it operated sporadically through the early 1990’s.
Rescued from ruin in 1997, New Egypt Speedway was saved from years of deterioration and completely rebuilt from the ground up by the Grosso family. The Grossos leveled the existing facility and replaced it with a sparkling, state-of-the-art, 1/3-mile dirt track.
In 1998, motorsports promoters from all 50 states named New Egypt “Most Outstanding Rehabilitation of a Speedway,” putting the central New Jersey track in the national spotlight during Daytona Speedweek ceremonies.
In 2006, New Egypt Speedway was purchased by Bill Miscoski and Fred Vahlsing. No strangers to racing, Miscoski had participated as both a competitor and a car owner at the Ocean County oval, and Vahlsing – who took sole ownership of New Egypt in 2013 — competed in drag racing and motocross. Under Miscoski and Vahlsing’s guidance, the Speedway was widened to the current configuration.
The Speedway itself is a racy 7/16-mile D-shaped clay oval, the grounds for some of the tightest, all-out wheel-to-wheel competition you’ll ever witness.
Outside of the battle zone, New Egypt Speedway features a daylight-quality lighting system and excellent sightlines from any seat in the house. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible, with a dedicated handicapped viewing section.
Whistle-clean concession facilities serve up everything from sausage sandwiches to ice cream treats at family-friendly prices. The Speedway’s well-versed track announcers keep fans informed and involved with a state-of-the-art sound system.
On the fans’ side of the fence, the buzzword is ‘interactive.’ Theme nights, contests, games, prizes, and even dancing in the aisles comprise a typical Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway, where the fans are as much a part of the show as the competitors.
The “Ralphie the Racer Kids’ Club” caters to the junior fan base with structured activities, games and prizes, weekly pit tours, and Ralphie himself—a friendly dog mascot.
